John Thomas Gordon of Ambridge, PA, died unexpectedly in his home on August 2, 2022. He was shy of his 75th birthday. Tom was a 1965 graduate of St. Veronica Catholic High School, Ambridge. He graduated with degrees from St. Vincent College with a B.S. in Mathematics, Carnegie Mellon University with a BSEE, and the University of Pittsburgh with an MSEE. Tom started his career as a college intern at Westinghouse Electric Corp., R&D Center, Pittsburgh (Churchill), PA. He quickly advanced after graduation at Westinghouse when he accepted a full-time position as an Engineer. He advanced to Senior Engineer in 1971, and in 1979 he advanced to Principal Engineer. Siemens Energy, Inc. acquired Westinghouse in 1998 and Tom continued his career at as Principal Engineer until his retirement in 2009. Tom loved his work, and his job took him all over the world including the Netherlands, Germany, and Japan. Tom was awarded two U.S. patents, and one Trade Secret granted. Tom was a member of the Institute of Electrical, Electronics Engineers.
Tom had an insatiable thirst for knowledge. While his intellectual pursuits were varied, he was most interested in maps. He loved to study maps, even for places he had never been. If you ever got lost, you could call Tom; he was just as reliable as a GPS. Tom was known as “the family historian.” His mind contained and endless knowledge of our family history. If one of us had any questions about some relation in the family, he would be able to trace it back to some great-grandfather’s sixth cousin twice removed who died in 1822. In hindsight, we probably should have written some of that down. Those who knew Tom can, and will, attest to his kindness, his gentleness, and his good humor. Tom never had a bad word to say about anyone – not even a single player on any of the Dallas Cowboys’ teams. Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Irene Gordon whom he cared for his entire adult life until she passed away in 2005. While he had no siblings, he was surrounded by many close cousins, whose company he enjoyed to the very last day. There will be no public viewing. A graveside blessing has yet to be determined. Arrangements entrusted to the Alvarez-Hahn Funeral Services and Cremation LLC.
